In the Beginning
After establishing the mango orchards and selling mangoes at southern markets during the 1990's, and following a downturn in mango prices due to their oversupply at those markets, our thoughts turned to using the mangoes for wine production.
Production began in 1999/2000, and construction of the Winery and Cellar Door followed, with the Cellar Door opening for business in July 2003.
Tropical fruit trees were planted to supply fruit for the wines we were planning, including jaboticaba, lychee, mulberry and bush cherry (native Nth Qld fruit exclusive to de Brueys).
Expansion Dreams become Real
Stage Two of the project commenced in 2005, beginning with the excavation and construction of the underground wine cellar, followed by the new Cellar Door and Function Room.
Now complete, de Brueys Functions Venue caters for weddings and corporate events, celebrations, luncheon groups and lots more.
Much attention has been paid to preserving the natural open woodland surroundings, with their population of kangaroos and wallabies, possums, native quolls and bandicoots, not to mention the extensive birdlife (including rosella parrots, rainbow lorikeets, black and white cockatoos, wedge tail eagles and kestrels). There are even crocodiles in the local creek at the rear of the property!
Walking tracks will entice you to explore the orchards and property and, if you're very lucky, spot the freshwater crocodiles in the creek.
Why Mareeba?
Mareeba, is an ideal centre in which to live and establish a Winery, for a number of reasons:
- the area is renowned for its abundance and availability of tropical fruits.
- it is very close to the international airport and tourist centre of Cairns (50 minutes drive by car).
- its high elevation on the Tablelands to the west of Cairns (500m), resulting in low humidity and cooler days and nights.
